Orthopaedic Trauma on Instagram: "People always ask “How do you know an ankle is unstable?” We assess that with an external rotation test like above. If an ankle is unstable it usually needs surgery. If it’s stable, it doesn’t need surgery and will heal ok on its own. As mentioned before, another way is to have the patient stress it by walking on it. So if they have been walking on it for a few days, and there’s no talar shift on X-rays, then it’s stable. Used with patient permission #orthotraum
